Choosing scale length and setup for your tuning

When we plan an OD guitar, we choose the scale length around your tuning, string gauges and playing preferences. The recommended scales above are starting points for that discussion.

Why consider a longer scale or multiscale?

A longer scale helps maintain string tension at lower tunings without relying only on thicker strings. A multiscale guitar uses different scale lengths across the strings. The perpendicular fret position also influences the fret angles and how the guitar feels to play.

Read more about multiscale in Specs & Options.

What happens when you change tuning or string gauge?

A change can mean your setup needs attention. Neck relief, string action, nut slots and intonation work together, and the right setup depends on your playing touch.

Multiscale does not replace correct intonation adjustment. Every guitar needs its saddles adjusted appropriately.

My workshop articles Is it setup time? and Things you should know explain these checks in more detail.
